Bitesize: What makes a good leader?

Leadership abilities may be taught. People that are shy can learn to be more extroverted. People who speak too quickly can learn to calm down. Those who despise confrontation can learn how to deal with them. These are all excellent qualities, but there is one critical leadership talent that must be mastered in order to be a successful leader. It’s the ability to put your ego aside and do what’s best for you, regardless of how it makes you seem.

Frank’s mistake

Be modest and teachable. It will help you achieve more than you think. It’s easy to put on a mask and try to pretend you are better than you are — more confident and knowledgeable. But that gets exhausting fast! And it’s hard to keep up the pretence long-term, especially when what you really want is for people to see and appreciate the real you. Instead, try being honest about what you don’t know. It can feel scary at first, but being humble will open doors in ways you could never imagine.

Let’s take Frank as an example.

Frank appeared to be a strong and capable leader. He attracted attention with his gleaming blue suit and loud voice. He believed that by seeming bigger and better than others, he would be more successful—he was mistaken. Frank refused to recognize when he made a mistake that lost the firm money because he let his ego lead the way. Instead of being honest, he threw people under the bus. Frank’s biggest blunder wasn’t losing the money; it was refusing to accept it. Frank lost his job once his bosses discovered they couldn’t trust him.

The fatal fault in Frank’s character was his pride. He might have been tremendously successful if he had set his pride aside and been more modest in the business.

Is humility the most crucial quality of leadership? No. Clear communication, decisiveness, emotional intelligence, and vision are just a few of the qualities that go hand in hand with strong leadership. Those other qualities won’t compensate for the lack of courage to admit when you’re wrong and learn how to rectify it.

Humility is not weak

Humility does not imply weakness or self-deprecation. It shouldn’t be counterproductive. Humility is about recognizing your talents and limitations and working to improve what you can. You are incorrect if you believe you are always correct.

Lead the way

Do you want to be a great leader? Work on public speaking, inspiring, and collaborative abilities as needed. However, don’t overlook the most crucial part of leadership: humility. Recognize when you’ve made a mistake. (It will get you respect.) Then do everything you can to remedy the situation and improve.
